Huawei Mate XT 2 has launched in China with a new tri-fold design and Kirin 9050 Pro chip. Huawei also uses launch event to introduce HarmonyOS 7, its latest operating system version for phones, tablets and watches.
Huawei holds launch event on September 7 in Guangzhou, South China. Event starts at 14:30 China time. Huawei names event “HarmonyOS 7 | HUAWEI Mate XT 2 and All-Scenario New Product Launch.”
Huawei opens Mate XT 2 pre-orders in China on August 31. Phone comes with 16GB RAM across all configurations. Storage options include 512GB, 1TB, 1TB with a privacy screen and 2TB with a privacy screen and stylus.
Huawei Mate XT 2 Design
Mate XT 2 brings a change in folding design. Original Mate XT uses a Z-fold design, while Mate XT 2 folds inward and adds a cover screen.
Inward folding helps protect flexible display when phone stays inside a pocket. Cover screen also gives users a display for normal phone use when Mate XT 2 remains closed.
Huawei previously used an outward-facing section on original Mate XT. One part of main display stayed outside when phone was closed. Mate XT 2 changes this approach by placing flexible display inside.
Huawei offers Mate XT 2 in black, white and purple. Storage and RAM options target users who need different levels of phone storage.
Huawei Mate XT 2 Display

According to Xinhua News Agency, Kirin 9050 Pro uses logic folding technology. Logic units sit in layered stacks inside one chip. Vertical interconnect channels help connect different layers.
This design can shorten signal paths. Shorter paths can help reduce latency and improve chip performance.
Kirin 9050 Pro also marks a major point in Huawei chip development. According to Xinhua, Huawei launches a new Kirin chip in a flagship product for first time in six years since Mate 40.
People’s Daily reports that Kirin 9050 Pro offers 42 percent higher performance than previous-generation Kirin 9030 Pro.
Kirin 9050 Pro Power Efficiency
Huawei also focuses on transistor density and power use with Kirin 9050 Pro.
Transistor density increases from about 155 million to 238 million transistors per square millimeter compared with Kirin 9030 Pro. This represents an increase of about 55 percent.
At comparable performance levels, NPU power consumption drops by 66 percent. GPU power consumption drops by 58 percent. CPU performance-core power consumption drops by 41 percent.
These changes can help Huawei improve performance while controlling power use.
Huawei semiconductor segment chief He Tingbo also publishes a paper on September 4 covering Huawei’s Tau (τ) Scaling Law. Paper presents measurements from Kirin 2026 chip and shows higher transistor density with lower power consumption across several computing units at comparable performance.

Reports before launch point to a battery above 6,000mAh for Mate XT 2. Huawei has not confirmed battery capacity in launch details covered by first report.
Original Mate XT has a 5,600mAh battery. Phone supports 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.
Mate XT 2 needs enough battery capacity to support a large foldable display and new Kirin 9050 Pro chip. Final battery size and charging speed depend on Huawei’s official specification list.
