Honor Robot Phone brings a new phone design to China with a 200MP camera, robotic gimbal, AI tracking, and professional video tools. Honor built a camera system that can lift from a phone body, rotate, follow a person, and record video without requiring a user to hold a separate gimbal.
Honor launched Robot Phone in China with a starting price of CNY 9,999. A 16GB RAM and 1TB storage version costs CNY 12,999. Honor says no launch outside China is planned for this generation.
Honor Robot Phone uses a robotic camera
Robot Phone places a 200MP camera on a four-axis robotic gimbal. More than 100 precision parts form camera movement system, while more than 100 patents support related technology.
Camera arm stays inside phone body when not in use. After a user opens camera, arm lifts over phone and points toward a subject. Camera can rotate at up to 360 degrees per second and support a full 360-degree movement.
Honor says camera system is 65% smaller than a normal gimbal while offering twice structural strength.

How Robot Phone tracks a subject
Subject tracking is a major part of Robot Phone. Camera uses gesture recognition, voice-source localization, and spatial awareness to keep a person inside frame.
A user can place phone on a surface and move around a room while camera follows movement. During a video call, livestream, or vlog, camera can adjust position without manual control.
Honor also uses AI to control camera movement. Yoyo, Honor’s AI assistant, can interact with camera arm through movement. Camera can nod, sway, and move with music, giving phone a physical form of AI interaction.
Honor wants AI to move beyond a screen. Company says future phones can act as carriers for intelligent agents instead of acting only as containers for applications.
Honor built a custom gimbal system
Fitting a moving camera into a phone created major engineering problems. Phone body already needs space for battery, chips, lenses, cooling hardware, cables, and antennas. Honor also needed space for four micro motor modules and a movement system.
Honor completed more than 10 major design changes and four generations of motor technology before reaching final design.
Company developed a custom full-structure motor because available motors could not meet requirements.
Gimbal system uses an industry-small rotary bearing and a thin through-axis. Honor says design reaches 44% higher torque density while taking less space.
Flip motor uses neodymium-iron-boron material and a five-level precision reduction system.
Honor also used titanium alloy and shield steel to reduce weight and improve structural strength.
Motor weight reaches only 2.6 grams. Robot Phone has 68 cables between gimbal and motherboard, including 19 coaxial cables. Cables need to handle repeated lifting, lowering, and rotation.
Honor solved a durability problem
Robot Phone faced another issue before launch. Testing found that flip mechanism could work for about one year, below a normal phone service cycle.
Honor then tested 18 material solutions within one week. Teams from materials, processing, modules, research, procurement, supply, and manufacturing worked on a solution.
After changes, Honor extended design service life to five years.
Phone also needed to pass drop and tumble testing before release. A moving camera creates more mechanical risk than a fixed phone camera, so reliability became a major part of development.
Robot Phone focuses on video creation
Honor worked with ARRI on imaging technology. Robot Phone supports professional tools such as ARRI LogC3, false color monitoring, and focus peaking.
LOG recording can help creators capture footage for later color grading.
Robotic movement also adds camera options that normal phone cameras cannot provide. AI SpinShot can create a rotating shot, while First Person View modes can follow movement during video recording.
However, camera hardware still faces limits. A dedicated vlogging camera can use a larger sensor, which can offer an advantage in low-light recording. Robot Phone may need software processing to handle some low-light situations.
Robot Phone has flagship hardware
Robot Phone is more than a camera phone. Phone uses Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, up to 16GB RAM, up to 1TB storage, a 6.31-inch OLED display, and a 7,060mAh battery.
Price starts at CNY 9,999 for a 12GB RAM and 512GB storage model.
A 16GB RAM and 1TB storage model costs CNY 12,999.
Based on reported exchange rates, prices equal about $1,483 and $1,928.
Honor Robot Phone sells in China
Honor opened sales for Robot Phone through its official online store and retail partners in China.
Pre-orders passed 400,000 units before sales began. Reports also say phone sold out across major e-commerce platforms within one minute after going on sale.
Supply may remain limited during first generation.
Despite a launch event described as a global launch, Honor confirmed that Robot Phone will not receive an international release.
Honor sees Robot Phone as an AI platform
Honor developed Robot Phone after its Alpha Strategy. Company combined AI multimodal technology, embodied intelligence, and imaging into one phone concept.
Li Jian, Honor CEO, described phone as an effort to bring AI beyond a chat interface.
Robot Phone can combine image, sound, gesture, and spatial information to understand a user and surrounding environment. System-level agent technology can then help plan and execute tasks.
Honor also works with Alibaba’s Qwen large model for AI functions.
Future AI phone development may combine local processing with cloud computing. Local processing can handle fast tasks, while cloud computing can handle more complex requests.
Honor expects voice and gesture control to become more common across phones, PCs, tablets, glasses, and other devices.
Robot Phone may shape future Honor phones
Honor says technology developed for Robot Phone will move into future products.
Magic9, scheduled for September 28, will use work from Robot Phone in AI, imaging, and computing. Honor also plans a new Agentic OS approach for Magic9.
Li Jian says mature phone designs can gain more from technology developed during Robot Phone research.
This approach gives Honor a path toward combining AI, imaging, hardware, and physical movement in future devices.
Why Honor built a robotic phone
Honor faced pressure from a shrinking phone market, higher memory costs, and competition. Company still chose to develop a phone with a complex mechanical system and a high production cost.
Robot Phone gives Honor a way to test a new phone category.
A moving camera changes how users record video. AI tracking removes some manual camera work. Gesture and voice control create another way to interact with a phone.
Robot Phone also shows how phone hardware can support AI beyond software.
For now, China remains only market for Robot Phone. Outside China, users can only watch camera demonstrations and wait for Honor to decide whether a future generation can reach more markets.
