Huawei Makes Global 5G Comeback with Pura 90s Series
Huawei has officially restarted its global 5G smartphone journey with the launch of the Huawei Pura 90s Series, marking the company’s first international 5G flagship release in years after facing major challenges from U.S. technology restrictions.
The new flagship lineup has debuted internationally in Malaysia, where Huawei has opened sales and pre-orders for the Pura 90s Pro Max and Pura 90s Pro. The launch signals Huawei’s renewed ambition to compete in the premium smartphone market against major brands such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and OPPO.
Huawei Pura 90s Series Brings 5G Back to International Markets
The biggest highlight of the Pura 90s Series is its return to global 5G connectivity. Huawei has officially listed 5G NR support for the new smartphones, ending a long period where its international devices were limited to 4G networks.
The company’s previous global 5G flagship was the Mate 40 Pro series. After U.S. sanctions restricted Huawei’s access to advanced semiconductor technology and key suppliers, the company was forced to launch international smartphones without 5G support.
Huawei later revived its 5G capabilities in China with Kirin-powered devices, but the technology remained unavailable internationally until the release of the Pura 90s Series.
Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max Features 200MP Telephoto Camera
The flagship model, the Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max, focuses heavily on photography and premium design.
The smartphone features:
- 6.9-inch LTPO OLED display
- 120Hz refresh rate
- Kirin 9030S processor
- 6,000mAh battery
- 100W wired charging
- 80W wireless charging
- 12GB RAM and up to 512GB storage
- IP68/IP69 dust and water resistance
The camera system is the main attraction. Huawei has equipped the device with a triple-camera setup featuring:
- 50MP main camera with variable aperture
- 200MP telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom
- 40MP ultra-wide camera
- 13MP front camera
Huawei says the 200MP Ultra Large Sensor Telephoto Camera is the key photography innovation of the device, supported by its True-to-Colour Camera 2.0 technology.
Huawei Pura 90s Pro Offers Flagship Features at Lower Price
The standard Huawei Pura 90s Pro brings many premium features at a lower price point.
Its specifications include:
- 6.6-inch OLED display
- 120Hz refresh rate
- Kirin 9030S chipset
- 6,000mAh battery
- 66W wired charging
- 50W wireless charging
- 50MP main camera
- 50MP telephoto camera
- 12.5MP ultra-wide camera
Both models include side-mounted fingerprint sensors, stereo speakers, and modern connectivity features.
Malaysia Becomes First International Market
Huawei selected Malaysia as the first overseas market for the Pura 90s Series.
The pricing is:
- Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max: RM4,899
- Huawei Pura 90s Pro: RM3,999
During the pre-order period, customers can receive discounts of up to RM400 along with additional gifts.
Huawei is expected to expand the devices into other regions, including Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.
EMUI 16 Replaces HarmonyOS for Global Users
Unlike Chinese versions that run HarmonyOS, the international Pura 90s Series uses EMUI 16, based on the Android Open Source Project.
This approach allows Huawei to provide a more familiar software experience for overseas customers while avoiding compatibility issues in international markets.
Huawei Attempts Smartphone Market Revival
The Pura 90s Series represents more than just a new smartphone launch. It is Huawei’s attempt to rebuild its global smartphone presence after years of restrictions.
In 2020, Huawei briefly became the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer by shipments, overtaking Samsung. However, sanctions affecting chip supply caused its global market share to decline significantly.
With its own Kirin processors and a stronger domestic supply chain, Huawei is now attempting another global comeback.
Can Huawei Regain Its Position in the Global Smartphone Industry?
The return of Huawei’s 5G flagship phones introduces new competition in the premium smartphone segment.
The company now faces established competitors with strong global ecosystems, including Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, and OPPO. The success of the Pura 90s Series will depend on consumer response, software availability, pricing, and Huawei’s ability to expand into more international markets.
For now, the Pura 90s Series marks a major milestone: Huawei is once again bringing 5G flagship smartphones to global consumers.
